The Southern Region of AFMA is pleased to host a field trip to Mount Lemmon. The tour will be led by the Arizona
Geological Survey.
Wildfire acts as a catalyst for change in ecologic, hydrologic, and soil geomorphic systems. Fires can substantially
modify soil water storage, water quality, soil nutrient and carbon cycling, and the likelihood of hazards such as
floods, erosion, and debris flows. It is imperative to understand the effects of repeated disturbance by wildfire, and
subsequent impacts on the resilience of the systems that co-regulate ecosystem recovery.
This field trip will visit several study plots that were established to assess soil hydrologic properties with time since
fire where we will learn about the data they have produced regarding watershed recovery.
Please wear appropriate field clothes, including sun protection and hiking shoes. We may be walking on uneven terrain up to ½ mile at some sites.
Bring snacks, a water bottle (water will be provided for refills) and a picnic lunch, which we will eat at the top of the mountain before returning to Tucson.
Lunch is NOT provided on this trip. Please plan on arriving around 7:45 AM, as the field trip will start promptly at 8:00 AM.
